Responding to the call

Anglican Bishop Rod Andrews of Saskatoon was moved to action by the inspiring message of Stephen Lewis at the 2004 General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. As he listened to the stories of people in Africa suffering with AIDS, about children caring for their sick parents and orphans, he began to imagine what all of Saskatchewan could do to help. In the summer of 2005, Bishop Rod borrowed a 1952 John Deere tractor and rode across the prairies for HIV and AIDS awareness. He quickly became known as “the tractor Bishop”. The trek covered 1,650 kilometers, included 30 events attended by over 1,000 people and raised $45,000 of which part When asked what his biggest lesson was on this journey of love, Bishop Rod responded, “It was to experience the response of concerned people to a real need even continents away for people they have never met.” “Communities with as little as thirty people donated hundreds of dollars. People really reached into their hearts and pockets,” said Bishop Rod.
