Innocence orphaned
In Bangladeshwhere HIV infection is the result of a flourishing sex trade industry, the children pictured here were born to mothers in brothels. Their mothers, who are sex workers, are at high risk of being infected with HIV and AIDS. The task of integrating victims of the sex trade industry into mainstream society is not easy. The children are systematically denied access to government primary schools and healthcare. Under-age sex workers are especially vulnerable to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and HIV infection, due in part to their biological underdevelopment, but mainly because of client demand for younger sex partners who are in no position to negotiate safe sex practices. PWRDF partner Jagorani Chakra Foundation launched a program on Human Rights for Brothel Children, which is helping the young boys and girls live a normal life by offering education, human rights training, counselling, regular classroom teaching and employment guidance for the sex workers and their children. The program provides a way out for the children and their mothers, where love, respect and kindness are modeled.
