A grandmother's plea
Tereza Birabwe lives in Kampala,Uganda. She has lost all of her children to AIDS and is now raising 10 grandchildren on her own. She knows there are anti- retroviral drugs that could help her 12-year-old HIV-positive granddaughter but she can’t afford them. Tereza supports the children by selling tomatoes and other produce at a nearby market. What Tereza wishes for most is to educate all of her grandchildren. Tereza belongs to Mulagu Grandmother’s Support Group, a grassroots program supported by PWRDF. The program brings together women who have lost their children to AIDS and are caring for their grandchildren and also provides loans that encourage the women to reintegrate themselves into the job market. Facing the same struggles and supporting each other brings them love and peace of mind.
