Gifts of hope
Anglican priest Deborah van $der Goes and Lutheran pastor Marvin Svingen exchanged marriage vows in June 2005. Instead of wedding gifts, they asked guests to give money to HIV and AIDS grassroots projects in Africa. The response was overwhelming: $3,870.00 was raised for the PWRDF HIV and AIDS initiative Partnership for Life. “We feel we have shared something of what we are about as a couple. It has doubled the joy of our wedding day.” Part of the money went towards an HIV and AIDS project supported by PWRDF, called Point of Light in Etwatwa, West Rand, South Africa. Mothers in their 20s and 30s who know that they are dying of AIDS gather weekly in Point of Light houses to share their experiences with one another in a pastoral setting and to build “Memory Boxes” that will be given to their children on the day they die.
