Family Suppy: rainwater tanks in the ground to catch runoff from the land
PWRDF
Alternatives to the Long Trek Down the River
When the system fails the people make the arduous roundtrip of 20km down to the river below the plateau. In order to avoid this difficult trek and to avoid the disappointment at the standpipes we have supported the construction of reinforced concrete catchment tanks that are dug in the ground and catch the rain water running off the ground or running off the roofs of buildings. Some families have built their own tanks and are able to sell some of their water while the supply from the rains last.
Large tanks in the ground are intended to catch rainwater runoff from the land. Note the branches that partially cover it in an attempt at preventing people or animals from falling in.
