Water Projects in Africa
Protected Water - improved covered tank protects from contamination and accidents
PWRDF
Community Management and Education
In Mozambique, PWRDF also supports water in Nampula province. This province is one of the poorest in the country and 93% of the population does not have access to potable water. Our partner, AMASI, works in communities where the government has already installed wells. The government provides no follow-up or maintenance to these wells and many fall into disrepair and disuse. AMASI mobilizes communities to create water committees to avoid or reverse this. The communities select three men and three women for their committee to fill the following positions: coordinator, conflict manager, finance (collection of fees), person in charge of locking/unlocking the pump (it is only open during certain hours) and 2 people who maintain and repair the pump. AMASI trains the committees in finances, conflict management and in the repair and maintenance of pumps. This year the AMASI facilitators are working in 19 villages and returning to 13 others to do follow-up. The facilitators also educate about proper hygiene and water-borne diseases.
