Water Projects in Africa

Old large water holding tank in danger of wearing out

PWRDF

Desperate to Meet Current Water Needs

PWRDF's partner, the development office of the Diocese of Masasi, is working in twenty-one villages. Teaching the villagers how to construct water catchment systems and dig shallow wells is an important component of their overall program. Ten of these villages are located on a high, dry plateau where drainage is far too efficient and water is a constant need and concern. Chihangu, one of these villages, struggles with the perennial problem of obtaining sufficient water.

A system built 53 years ago pumps water into a large holding tank and from there water is pumped to standpipes to serve the subvillages. Fights often occur at the standpipes where 4000 people use a single standpipe. To make matters worse, during the frequent failures of electricity the water cannot be pumped. The system is now showing real signs of old age and is in danger of wearing out.
