Hand-dug shallow well in Nyeregete, Tanzania
PWRDF
Healthy water in the community for the whole villiage
The Diocese of the Southern Highlands is working with four villages (with sub-villages) in the Mbarali district. Women from these villages were forced to walk on average a round trip of 8 km to get safe water. Some people in order to save time and effort draw water unfit for drinking from irrigation canals for the neighbouring rice farms. In the past year 400 people have attended seminars on protecting water sources and how to construct hand-dug shallow wells (shallow can be 12 metres deep!). Water committees have been formed in all four villages.
This hand-dug shallow well in Nyeregete provides good, clean water to the whole village. The water committee makes sure the water point continues to function well and also makes sure that each family pays the minimal yearly fee of 1,000TZS ($1.CAD) for maintenance costs.
