Accompanying Communities in Crisis an overview of PWRDF Emergency Response

Meeting Basic Needs

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster meeting basic needs is the priority.  Relief efforts focus on: securing food, safe drinking water, and temporary shelter; providing health care and medical supplies; rebuilding food supplies with seeds and agricultural materials.   Extended care measures are often included in these preliminary efforts, including HIV prevention and trauma counselling.  ACT members have experience and expertise in a range of emergency sectors: camp management, shelter, food and non-food distribution, health care, water and sanitation, disaster preparedness, de-mining, transition from relief to development, conflict resolution, and peace and reconciliation.
