From Cookies to Champaigne: 50 Cafe Events

September 20, 2009

PWRDF is launching a fun and exciting new initiative for parishes and dioceses to celebrate its 50th anniversary. "From Cookies to Champagne: 50 CAFE Events" encourages and engages parishes in their ministry of outreach and social justice.

PWRDF offers this event planning guide (pdf) and the stories of events that have already taken place to provide a starting point and inspiration for planning a local celebration.

A kit will be made available to parishes wishing to host an event, which will include a DVD with a special anniversary message from Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Support and resources are available, and all parishes holding events will be acknowledged.

For more information, to order your parish kit, or to tell us about an event that has already happened, please contact:

Prayers of the People

Prayers of the People to Commemorate The Springhill Mine Disaster, October 23, 1958

As we celebrate and give thanks to God for fifty years of Anglican compassion and action around the world through The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, let us place before God our prayers for the world, the church and those near and dear to us. I invite you to respond:O God, hear our prayer.

We pray for all who suffer the results of natural disasters: earthquakes, storms, floods, drought and disease....those who have died, those who struggle to rebuild their lives.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We pray for all victims of human error or human greed and hate in mine disasters, oil spills, conflicts, wars, genocides, unjust imprisonment.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We pray for all those millions displaced, fleeing for their lives, seeking refuge.
Response: O God hear our prayer

We pray for all those who come to their aid, giving of themselves in time, energy and money to stand beside and support communities around the world in partnerships of caring and justice.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We ask God to help us discern our proper roles and grant us the wisdom, compassion and strength to fulfill them.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We pray for those near and dear to us, or known to us, who are sick, shut in, handicapped, and for those who have died. (please name them now)
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We pray for those who remember that rumble of the earth 50 years ago and have lived with the loss and lives changed by the Springhill mine disaster.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We pray for all those who have committed themselves for fifty years in the work of The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, holding up especially our Primate, the staff, the board, the volunteers at the national and local levels all across Canada.
Response: O God, hear our prayer

We offer these prayers and all our prayers to God who hears us and calls us to respond. May God's love and comfort spread throughout the world. Amen.

50th Anniversary Prayer

O GOD, we give you thanks,

That out of the sorrow and
suffering of the Springhill
mine disaster, hope was
born, and a new light shone,
calling your Church forward
to love mercy, to do justice,
 to walk humbly with you.

Give us ears to hear the voices
of all in need, hearts to
respond in love, and wills to
ensure that tables are spread,
families are gathered, and all
receive the dignity for which
they were born.

For this is your mission
O God, and we long to do
your will, for the sake of
him who died that the world
might live, Jesus Christ our
Lord.

AMEN

-Rt. Rev. Thomas Morgan
