PWRDF Story: Food for the most vulnerable
K’inal Antzetik - The Land of Women
In Chiapas Mexico, Indigenous women were having a hard time having healthy babies and staying healthy themselves because they are so poor. The risk of a mother dying when having a baby was 3 times higher than for other women in Mexico. K’inal Antzetik, which means "Land of Women" is a Mexico City-based NGO that works to empower indigenous women throughout southern Mexico through workshops, training programs, exchanges, research and publication of educational materials, advocacy and accompaniment. PWRDF has been a partner of K’inal Antzetik since 1997.

Because Anglicans in Canada care, PWRDF was able to fund a program to help mothers and babies and provided training and resources for Indigenous women and families. Traditional midwives are also able to learn from this program, so now there are more healthy mothers and children in this part of Mexico.
FOR REFLECTION
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you
something to drink?’... The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever
you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:37,40
Family Activity: Renew or create a new table grace tradition
Saying grace before meals creates a moment in the day to give thanks for blessings and also names the time that the family is gathered at the table a sacred time. If you already say grace at meals, consider using a different one for awhile to draw a special attention to this time. Or perhaps invite each member of the family to create their own grace -- younger ones can be partnered with older ones for this task. Take a turn each night to share your good work. Have a look at some of the graces that we have collected and share your family's table grace with us at PWRDF. Tell us where it came from if you know. More Table Graces...

A Life Like Mine by UNICEF
Ages 9-12 An uplifting look at children's rights around the world. A good introduction to basic concepts of survival, development, protection and participation. Available from Parent Books.
Activity for ages 6-10: Food for a Week Collage
Have a look at the photos from this new book, "The Hungry Planet: "What the World Eats", by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio. It shows how people from 24 different countries feed themselves with a picture of each family and their groceries for a week.
Create your own family grocery collage based on this example. Keep track of what you eat and for each item create an image -- colour it, use a label, or cut it out of a newspaper or magazine. At the end of the week glue it all together and add a picture and description of your family as shown in the book. You can add a detailed food list if you like, and a favorite recipe. Show it to your family and have a conversation about it? What do you see? How does it compare to the other photos? What would you change? What more do you want to know? What can you do to help those who have less food than they need. Write this down on your picture too. Take a picture of your picture and send it to PWRDF.
A note to parents about getting the book: Pictures from the book are on-line. One source is the photographers website, "The Hungry Planet: "What the World Eats" and there are more photos at the Time Magazine site. Visit these sites with your child as they are adult news and information sites. Or borrow the book from a library. ISBN-10: 1580086810
