POSITION: Program Coordinator–Canadian Social Development

REPORTS TO: Team Leader, Economy of Life

CLASSIFICATION: 10 month contract commencing May 1, 2008 to replace a permanent full time staff person on a leave of absence
OFFICE LOCATION: Toronto

If you are a creative, energetic individual with a strong commitment to social justice and significant experience in advocacy in the area of Canadian Social Development, please apply.  As the interim Program Coordinator for Canadian Social Development you will be responsible for program development and coordination, research and analysis, policy development and advocacy, in support of KAIROS objectives on poverty issues. The work will be focused and prioritized to fit a 10 month contract. Reporting to the Team Leader of the Economy of Life Team, and working as part of the team, you will strengthen KAIROS and member churches’ work in efforts to eradicate poverty.

You will not assume full responsibility for the permanent position, but in recognition of the limited time frame will carry out priority activities.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES (May 2008-Feb. 2009)


Complete Special Anti-Poverty Projects
Over the period of the contract you will be responsible for undertaking the following major activities to complete special anti-poverty projects KAIROS has underway: 

  • Disseminate poverty action resources to churches and pilot human rights advocacy workshops (May – September).
  • Oversee completion of financial and narrative reporting on HRSDC project (July, September-November).
  • Support delivery of 4-6 poverty reduction advocacy workshops to church people in Toronto.
  • Ongoing coordination and administration of the KAIROS Anti-Poverty Fund.
  • Work with KAIROS’ Canadian Social Development program committee and assist in planning its fall 2008 meeting.

Program Development and Coordination

  • Continue to implement program initiatives in the area of Canadian Social Development on issues promoting effective poverty reduction strategies in Canada.

 Research and Analysis

  • Contribute to advocacy on Canadian social development issues with the Canadian government, Members of Parliament, and parliamentary committees.
  • Continue to work in cooperation with Canadian ecumenical and denominational groups across Canada with the goal of eliminating poverty in Canada.

Requirements

  • Commitment to the mission and values of KAIROS.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the area of Canadian social development, in particular poverty related issues.
  • University degree in social sciences or related degree.
  • Three years relevant experience in Canadian social justice work .
  • Ability to work in a Christian context.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and administer grants to social development groups.
  • Ability to work in a collegial team supervised by a Team Leader.
  • Good skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Some weekend work.  Ability to travel in Canada .
  • Functional knowledge of French a definite asset.
