2005-2010: Keep the Promise

PWRDF is a member of The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, and joins with organizations around the world to bring attention to the global AIDS pandemic on World AIDS Day.

World AIDS day is commemorated every year on 1 December. It is an opportunity for individuals and groups all over the world to come together to remember, and demonstrate worldwide support to, people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. It is the one day in the year where issues surrounding HIV and AIDS can take center stage.

The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance (EAA) strongly encourages faith-based communities to make the most of World AIDS Day 2008 by engaging in some form of worship, event, or advocacy focused on HIV and AIDS.

Liturgical Resources for World AIDS Day

Worship Service for World AIDS Day 2008, Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance This service is built around the symbolic action of blowing out a candle that represents the rate of deaths from AIDS-related illnesses around the world -- every 15 seconds--with a sound and a candle that is blown out.

Advent in a Time of AIDS This service puts together the Advent texts in the common lectionary, Year C, with the theme, "Keep the Promise" following on the theme of accountability for World AIDS Day 2006.

Access for All:  The Faith Community Responding A simple ecumenical service used at the 2004 gathering at the International AIDS Conference in Thailand that uses cords or ribbons as a symbol of God's inclusive love.

Keep the Promise: Biblical and Theological Reflections, prepared by the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance.

Ideas from Parishes

Here are some examples of what Anglican parishes in Canada have done to mark World AIDS Day and to lift up this theme in Advent.

AIDS Evergreen  St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Kelowna, B.C. made an Advent/Christmas evergreen tree into an AIDS tree.  They purchased red winter hats, scarves, gloves and mittens that parishioners will be asked to purchase and place on the tree.  After Advent they gave these winter accessories to the local shelters. They have also purchased clear glass ornaments that the youth used to decorate and place on the tree.

Photo Exhibit Last year Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, B.C. is hosted the PWRDF Facing AIDS Facing Reality photo exhibit to mark World AIDS Day.
