Speaking Engagement Guidelines

Based on current practice, March 2006

What and Why and Where

What: To tell the story of The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund. Speaking engagements are a tool that draws Canadian Anglicans deeper into relationship with PWRDF partners.

Why: The network needs a personal connection to The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund that enables learning. Stories need to be articulated in a compelling way that increases people's capacity to Pray, Act and Give on behalf of PWRDF.

Where: We are developing a roster of speakers across the country that balances each diocese's access to staff. Repetitive return engagements to the same parish will be closely reviewed as to value.

Who Speaks

A) Volunteers and Staff
Current and former staff, current and former Board members, parish and diocesan representatives, committed PWRDF friends who may have visited partners. Staff will normally speak at regional and diocesan gatherings only, no parishes.

B)
Staff would speak at a parish only if:

  • If there is a strong connection -- big supporters, special project
  • If there is a personal connection that staff wanted to honour
  • If there is potential for a mutually beneficial new relationship
  • If staff are in the area for other meetings and one of the above reasons was present.

C) Combined Opportunities
Staff would speak at a parish in a morning service (i.e. 15 min sermon) if the opportunity for a regional workshop could be arranged for later in the day. These could be proactively sought as appropriate.

D) Increased Profile
The Public Engagement Team would proactively seek speaking opportunities in areas of the country that could benefit from an increased PWRDF profile.

PWRDF Responsibilities

PWRDF will

Make initial arrangements for engagement by:

  • Including the reality that providing this service costs the organization and a donation is always appreciated
  • Requesting that envelopes & brochures be made available in pews if possible
  • Preparing the speaker by sharing information about the parish and/or event
  • Providing a template for speaking that includes the PWRDF mission and financial ask
  • Determining what is appropriate or fair in terms of number of demands. (i.e.  Three services with two sets of readings and a children's time. Is this a reasonable request for one morning's work?)
  • Cover travel expenses as necessary
  • Ship materials as needed
  • Notify Diocesan Representatives and the Diocesan office in advance if request has not come from them and follow up after the event to learn about any affect it might have had
  • Check in with parish to see how the event was received. (We may develop a questionnaire to facilitate this.)
