Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received – only what you have given: a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.

KAIROS Sunday 2008: On Holy Ground

October 1, 2008

Celebrate and renew your faith community’s work for social justice with a KAIROS Sunday service, in your own congregation or with partners from other churches or faiths.

KAIROS is the social justice organization of eleven Canadian churches and church agencies. One of the aims of KAIROS Sunday is to raise awareness of the faithful action for justice that KAIROS strives to offer our churches and world.

The suggested date is the last Sunday before Lent (also Transfiguration Sunday) on February 3.  But any Sunday in which your faith community chooses to focus on the Gospel call to justice and peace can also be KAIROS Sunday.

An ecumenical liturgy, bulletin insert, sermon and background notes, children’s resources and supplementary material is avaiable on the KAIROS website.

Questioning Development DVD

March 1, 2007

DVD Running Time: 27 minutes
DVD/Discussion/Activity time: 1 hour+

Description: Over the years, the concept of 'development' has been constantly questioned and redefined.  Is it possible to do it justly?  Who is directing it?  Criticisms have come from the South that too often development practice has been implemented incorrectly - placed in the hands of the wrong folks, that the images used to fundraise for development have been demoralizing and one-sided, and that the impetus to engage in development has come out of misdirected intentions (to 'help' in a patronizing way rather than to 'partner').  Overall, too much development practice has been 'donor-centred' rather than 'partner-centred'.

The new DVD "Questioning Development" is a first step in to learning about positive ways to partner in the language of youth and young adults. Co-produced by the Youth Initiatives of The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (D&P) and The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), Questioning Development is meant to accompany the respective groups' 24-hour fasting programs.  The DVD is aimed at a 14-20 year old audience - it can be easily adapted for older groups.

Questioning Development is 25 minutes long and has 4 main parts as well as an accompanying guide with group questions activities. The DVD also has various other multimedia files included on the disc for use in parish and youth group contexts.

Enough for All Resources

Pennies for Water

The children in St. Michael's parish in Hamilton, Ontario raised more than $500 for PWRDF with an Advent fundraising project - Pennies for Water.  On the first Sunday of Advent the kids received the "Enough for All" booklet and a ziplock bag to collect pennies. After reading the booklet together in Sunday School, the children also prepared bags to hand out to the congregation - which was very well received.  The campaign wrapped up with a sale of baked treats where even more cash was collected.  Thanks St. Michael's for an innovative and inspirational  example.  View the note that went home to parents with the baggies.
